Bloch Modes Coupling in Photonic Crystal Waveguides

We investigate the properties of Bloch modes inside a photonic crystal waveguide. By using simultaneously a near field optical microscope and a transmittance setup, we demonstrate that Bloch modes having different parity are coupled.

Interlaminar fracture toughness behavior of electron-beam cured carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy-resin composites

The work describes the preparation and physical-mechanical characterization of unidirectional CFRP panels manufactured by an electron beam curing technique. Delamination fracture toughness in Mode I and II is investigated in order to evaluate the influence of fiber–matrix adhesion strength, matrix toughness and matrix crosslinking density as determined by the radiation curing process. A matrix system comprising a DGEBA epoxy monomer and an initiator of cationic polymerization have been used, with one batch of resin mixed with a PES monomer in order to enhance matrix toughness. Evaluation of toughness by finite fracture mechanics from crack onset strain of brittle coatings on polymers

Crack onset strain measurements of a confined layer in tension provide the means for layer toughness estimation. The procedure can be simplified if steady-state conditions prevail starting from the commencement of crack propagation, an assumption frequently employed in energy release rate evaluation. It is demonstrated, by numerical analysis of experimental data, that an estimate of the defect size in the film is needed in order to reliably evaluate its fracture toughness from the crack onset strain. Resist-based silver nanocomposites synthesized by lithographic methods

In this work, the formation of silver metal nanoparticles inside a negative-tone resist based on poly(vinyl alcohol) is achieved by electron beam lithography. The chemistry of this sensitive resist allows the production of nanoparticles as well as the polymer crosslinking by the electron radiation. Due to the presence of the silver nanoparticles, the final composite exhibits a plasmonic behavior, which was characterized by measuring the absorbance. The lithographic properties of the resist have been characterized. The technique has also been exported to UV lithography, where silver nanoparticles are obtained inside the polymeric patterns after optical lithography.

This clinical case report describes the clinical findings and diagnosis of lacrimal gland adenocarcinoma that developed 20 years after external beam radiotherapy in the treatment of bilateral retinoblastoma. Visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy, fundus color photography, nuclear magnetic resonance, lateral orbitotomy and histological analysis are described.

Symplectic analysis of thin-walled curved box girders with torsion, distortion and shear lag warping effects

Shear lag effect and torsional and distortional warping can significantly affect the performance of thin-walled curved box girders used in modern bridge engineering. The structural behaviour of these bridges exhibits complexity due to coupled bending and torsion together with warping effects of non-uniform torsion, distortion and shear lag. Since the introduction of immediate implant placements, the buccal bony wall has been a major consideration for success due to its correlation with soft tissue contour and color. This report presents the stability of the buccal wall thickness of an immediately placed implant at the anterior maxilla over 10 years. Although the width of the buccal wall decreased at the 2-year post-op follow-up, it remained stable afterward according to cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans. Analysis of the angular acceptance of surface plasmon Bragg mirrors

International audience; We analyze an important aspect of the behavior of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) Bragg mirrors: the dependence of the angular acceptance for reflection on the incidence angle. By means of leakage radiation microscopy, both in direct and Fourier space, we observe that the angular acceptance diminishes for increasing incidence angles. This effect, which can considerably affect the design of devices based on these elements, is shown to be the consequence of the decrease of the bandgap width with increasing incidence angle.
